Summer on Lake Minnetonka has its own rhythm. From the Wayzata Art Experience in late June to a long calendar of yacht-club regattas, beach concerts, and farmers markets, the lake’s social infrastructure is part of why so many residents call it the most liveable summer address in the Midwest. Here are the events Jason recommends penciling onto your calendar.
Marquee dates
Wayzata Farmers Market
Saturday mornings, mid-May through October, in the heart of downtown Wayzata. Local produce, artisan goods, and a reliable weekend gathering place that has become part of the city’s identity.
Wayzata Yacht Club Regatta Series
One of the country’s most active inland-lake racing programs. The Wayzata Yacht Club hosts a packed regatta calendar from spring through fall — spectator viewing from the harbor and Wayzata Beach is excellent.
Wayzata Art Experience
The signature summer art festival on Lake Street East. 150+ fine-art exhibitors, food trucks, and live music across two days. Saturday 10 am–6 pm, Sunday 10 am–4 pm. Free to attend, walkable from anywhere downtown.
Excelsior Art on the Lake
Excelsior’s signature summer art festival on Water Street and the lakeshore. 130+ juried artists, live music, regional food vendors, and free admission. Saturday 10 am–6 pm, Sunday 10 am–4 pm.
Greater Wayzata Chamber Events
The Chamber maintains the most reliable calendar of seasonal events around Wayzata and the lake — concerts in the park, beach concerts, holiday festivities, and seasonal series. Worth bookmarking.
Lake Minnetonka boat tours & cruises
The Lake Minnetonka steamboat Minnehaha and several private charter operators run regular tours from late spring through Labor Day. A unique way to see the bays and points that define the lake’s housing geography.
Lake Minnetonka 4th of July fireworks
The lake’s signature celebration. Excelsior, Wayzata, and Tonka Bay all host fireworks; viewing from a boat in the bays is a uniquely-Minnetonkan experience.
Looking to live near the action? Walkability to downtown Wayzata, Excelsior, or Mound is one of the most heavily weighted attributes in the lake’s housing market — and it directly drives long-term value.
Where to live for the summer calendar
If your summer revolves around the events above, three Lake Minnetonka cities stand out:
- Wayzata: the densest concentration of summer programming with walkable access to most of it.
- Tonka Bay: walking distance to Excelsior’s harbor district, plus quieter eastern-bay shoreline.
- Orono: the most lake shoreline per capita, with easy boat access to the entire lake’s calendar.
